The Black Eyed Peas are an American/Filipino hip hop/pop group formed in Los Angeles in 1995. The group is currently composed of American artists will.i.am, Taboo, Fergie and Apl.de.ap. Since their breakout album “Elephunk” in 2003, they have seen international fame for their pop/dance-oriented style of hip hop music. Black Eyed Peas have so-far sold an estimated 56 million albums and singles to date worldwide, and still counting.

Black Eyed Peas went to centenary state high school and got their start in 1988 when will.i.am (born 1975 William James Adams Jr.) and apl.de.ap (born 1974 Allan Pineda) began rapping and performing together around Los Angeles. The pair signed to Ruthless Records (run by Eazy-E) after catching the attention of the nephew of Jerry Heller (Eazy-E’s manager). Along with Mookie Mook (Burning Star), Dante Santiago & DJ Motiv8, they called their group A.T.B.A.N. Klann. Their debut album, Grass Roots, was not released originally because Ruthless did not consider the social themes reflected in the group’s music to be marketable to their audience. A single “Puddles of H2O” was released in 1994 but no album was released until it leaked onto the Internet in the mid 2000s.

Black Eyed Peas Unique Recycling Initiative with RETH¿NK and hummel RETH¿NK and hummel

Black Eyed Peas manager escapes Perez Hilton assault charge

Black Eyed Peas' Polo Molina has seen an assault charge filed by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton against him dropped.

Molina was accused of punching Hilton, real name Mario Lavandeira, outside a Toronto nightclub after the MuchMusic Video Awards in June after the blogger allegedly made a homophobic slur about band member Will.I.Am. 

But an assault charge against Molina was dropped yesterday (November 18) after he issued a written apology to the celebrity blogger.

Molina also agreed not to contact Hilton except through his lawyer, not to carry a weapon for 12 months, not to come within 100 metres of Cobra NightClub, where the alleged incident took place, and to donate $500 (£300) to Toronto's Red Door Family Shelter, reports the Canadian Press Association.

His lawyer read the written apology outside court, saying: "I apologise for what I did on June 22 of 2009. Even though you [Hilton] engaged in highly offensive comments, including a homophobic slur to my clients, I acknowledge that these kinds of issues should not be resolved through a physical response." 

Hilton's lawyers said they were unhappy with the choice of words in the apology, but it was ultimately accepted.

"Although accepting the fact that he shouldn't resort to violence, he attempted to say that there was a precipitating cause," the celebrity blogger's lawyer Brian Greenspan, said. "A sincere apology is a sincere apology."

Offensive term in Black Eyed Peas review - not an error

A caller asked a question about something in Saturday's paper that gave me a double take as well. In the review of the multiplatinum, multiple-Grammy-winning Black Eyed Peas' concert last week at the Sprint Center, the first song in the setlist is named as "Let's Get Retarded."

"How do you think that could have happened?" asked the caller. "Do you think someone was making a joke?"
That was my initial fear, too -- that someone was making a terrible crack about the group and it made it to print. So I was extremely surprised to check out the official track listing of the band's album "Elephunk," which shows that the track in fact originally went by that name. Looks like the group re-recorded the lyric and re-released the song as the much blander "Let's Get It Started," too. To be honest, I just don't have it in me to research this one any further.  Bottom line: I just listened to the original version on Rhapsody, and yes, it was built around the word "retarded."

The Star has printed pretty much every curse word or slur that I can think of at one time or another, and I've argued before that when it's presented in the proper context -- especially when it's a question of whether the word is appropriate or note -- that anything can be justifiable. Here, though, my personal preference would have been to use the track's new name, or maybe even noted that it's an offensive term without printing it.

But I suppose I could see the other side too. After all, the band wrote and released the lyric. I'm one who finds the term extremely offensive in this context, but that the band used it is simple reality. Maybe whether it's objectionable or not should be up to the reader, who can form his or her opinions of the Black Eyed Peas based on how they use language.
